Well, 2012 has been a year to regroup, rejuvenate and catch up on much needed family time. We are back in the game and ready to bring the Selah FunD Run back for 2013. We are in the process of selecting a charity for 2013 who will receive the proceeds from our race. This will be one that is very close to home and very personal. We hope you will join us!
Wow! Is it already July!
So taking stock of the past couple of years... less than 4 years ago, 2 average jills and a joe started running and entered a race. We were a hot mess - a cold snowy day in Feb 2008, dressed in cotton (insert horrified gasp from "runners" who know the evils of cotton) from head to toe. It was around that time we decided "heck, if we can run 4.1 miles why not 13.1"... and the rest is history! The "jack" has been busy - in addition to being a busy working dad, he spent every Team in Training seasonraising gobs of money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society since it came to Yakima in Jan 2009, coaches TNT now and recently paced his lovely "jill" to her first "sub 4:30" marathon! "Jack" has finished 5 full marathons in the last 2 years! The "jills" have had quite the past 2 years... 2 years, 2 working mom "jills", 1 pregnancy/baby (the "younger" jill), 2 major surgeries (the "elder" jill), a few running injuries (both), 8 fundraising seasons with Team in Training, 11 marathons, at least 12 half marathons and countless shorter races. - oh did i mention the pounds lost since we started running? Combined about 85 :0) The "jills" even managed to pull off 3 marathons in 85 days - so both are officially "Marathon Maniacs" (MM#4070 and MM#4080) Running is such a blessing in so many ways - yes we love that we are fit and trim but mostly we love the fantastic people we meet, the good times we share... getting to help out some worthwhile charities is just the icing! Ok so we also love to eat ... and can you seriously eat when you train for marathons!!! Keep on running ... susan (the "gopher") Wowser - can't believe its the 3rd Annual! So in the 2 years since our first event, the 3 "average jills and joes" have collectively:
- finished 8 marathons - finished about a dozen half marathons - lost count on the short races - birthed 1 baby - survived 2 major surgeries - lost too many people to blood cancers which is why we keep supporting LLS and its wonderful mission to find a cure for blood cancers and help patients and families along the way. We love that so many folks come out for our events. We love even more that for many of you one of our events was your first race AND you're still racing! Paying it forward is what its all about. We are running, keep running because runners around here ROCK and are an incredibly supportive, welcoming bunch of folks. We've also been so blessed with support from Hard Core Runners Club, our local busines community and community members - because of this we are able to donate ALL registration feed to our charity - this year again will be the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! This year looks to be an ever better year for the FunD Run!!! Happy running!!! the gopher How amazing - over 180 finishers to this year's 5k. The highlight was "average joe" Sean introducing our special guests:
Honored TNT Teammate Baby Lilly who did a little "running dance" for us! Famed artist behind our awesome race t-shirt Lukkes Hultberg (Baby Lilly's brother :0) who had just celebrated his 7th birthday! In fact a very large Lukkes & Hultberg clan was out for the race! Its humbling and inspiring to see the outpouring of generosity and compassion from this beautiful valley. The race raised over $3600 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I assure you - family's like Lilly's are profoundly grateful for everyone who are willing to support this wonderful organization. ~~~the selah funD run gopher :0) Just got back from the first of 2 info meetings for Yakima/Ellensburg's 3rd Team in Training season. It so exciting to see the new faces - so nervous, not sure that they can do a half or full but excited. It's wild - that was us just 1 year ago! Super excited to see the alums back for another round. We have an amazing honored teammate this year, Baby Lilly... we all met her at our October Trek 'n Treat!!
As for plans for the 2nd Annual Selah Community FunD Run??? It will be a new fun course so stay tuned! How fun it was to see kids, parents, grandparents, friends come out on Halloween and do something other than eat candy!!! But seriously - we were so excited by the great turnout and loved that kids and adults both had a great time. Thanks to everyone for making this another great success!!!
the selah community fund run Gopher Here we go again on FUND Run #2. The "average jills" are very excited about the lastest in our series of runs and will definately be getting our "average joes" to help us over the next few weeks! The Trek 'n Treat will raise some funds for a great organization - The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society - and provide you and your family with a fun alternative to gobs of candy on Halloween! We hope lots of folks come out and enjoy the day...
the selah community fund run Gopher... When we started running a couple of years ago, we never ever thought we'd run a race - and here we are veterans of several races including a few half-marathons and our first marathon.
We don't break any land speed records, nor do we claim to love all of our time pounding the pavement - in fact, we've had more training runs of torture that we can count! But we generally feel good "that we ran" and of course love that we can eat guilt free! What we do all agree on is running with a purpose is the real motivator for getting back out there - and if we can have some fun doing it all the better! So the Selah Community FUND Run concept was born... get our community together, have some fun and give the proceeds to an organization doing great charitable work! |
